Why Taormina Stole My Heart – A 5-Day Sicily Itinerary

In August 2024, I spent five days in Taormina, Sicily. It was one of the best trips I’ve ever taken. The town is small, beautiful, and full of history. It sits on a hill above the sea. The views are amazing.

The Ancient Theatre

On my first day, I visited the ancient Greek theatre. It’s called Teatro Antico di Taormina. It is very old—more than 2,000 years. But it still looks strong and beautiful.

From the top, I saw the blue sea and Mount Etna in the distance. It was hot, but I didn’t care. The place gave me chills. I could imagine people watching plays here long ago. The theatre is still used today for shows and concerts.

A Day at the Beach

Taormina is on a hill, so to reach the beach, I took a cable car. It was a fun ride with great views.

I spent a lot of time at Isola Bella. It’s a small island close to the shore. A thin strip of sand connects it to the beach. The water was warm and very clear. I swam and relaxed all afternoon.

The beach has small stones, not sand, so it’s a good idea to bring water shoes. But the beauty of the place makes it worth it.

The Public Garden

One morning, I visited the Giardino Pubblico, or public garden. It was quiet and peaceful. There were many trees, flowers, and strange old towers. A woman from England made the garden over 100 years ago.

I sat on a bench and looked at the sea. I could also see Mount Etna. It was a perfect place to rest. I came back again in the evening to watch the sunset. It was even more beautiful then.

Walking in Town

The main street in Taormina is called Corso Umberto. I walked there every day. There are many shops, cafes, and small art stores. In the evening, the street is full of people. Everyone is walking, eating gelato, or just enjoying life.

I tried a cold drink called granita. My favorite flavor was almond. I also sat in cafes and watched people go by. It felt very calm and happy.

Sicilian Food

The food in Taormina was amazing. I ate a lot of local dishes like:

  • Arancini (fried rice balls)
  • Pasta alla Norma (pasta with eggplant and tomato)
  • Grilled swordfish
  • And many cannoli (sweet pastries with ricotta cheese)

Every meal was tasty. Even small restaurants served great food. Eating in Sicily is a joy.

The Vibe of Taormina

Taormina is special. It’s old but alive. It’s popular with tourists, but it still feels real. People are friendly and relaxed. There is no rush. Life moves slowly, in a good way.

Even though it was August and very hot, I enjoyed every minute. The views, the sea, the food, the flowers—it all felt magical.

I’ll Be Back

When my five days ended, I didn’t want to leave. Taormina felt like a dream. I know I will return one day. If you ever visit Sicily, make sure to spend some time in Taormina.

It’s not just a place to see. It’s a place to feel.
